NSW Conversion Practices Ban

We were engaged by Anti-Discrimination NSW to create an animated explainer video about the NSW Conversion Practices Ban Act 2024, which came into effect in April 2025. This public awareness campaign helps inform people—particularly LGBTQA communities—about the ban on harmful change and suppression (or “conversion”) practices across the state.

Conversion practices are discredited attempts to change or suppress a person’s sexual orientation or gender identity. These can take many forms, from counselling and spiritual guidance to more subtle, sustained messaging within faith or family settings. The new law makes it clear: these practices are not only harmful—they are now illegal in NSW.

Our role was to update the animation, originally made for VEOHRC, to reflect the wording and scope of the NSW legislation, align it with Anti-Discrimination NSW’s brand, and ensure the content was accessible, respectful, and affirming. The animation outlines what is considered a conversion practice, what is not, and where people can go for support.

This project was created by an entirely queer team, with collaboration grounded in deep care and community benefit. Voiceover was performed by non-binary actor Mantshologane Maile, whose performance brought warmth, clarity, and authenticity to the script. Recording took place at Studio Under the Stairs, a proudly LGBTQA recording space that shares our values of inclusion and solidarity.

Importantly, this was also our first project to include an Auslan (Australian Sign Language) translation—a vital step in making the message accessible to Deaf and hard-of-hearing communities. The Auslan translation was provided by a Deaf LGBTQA translator, continuing our commitment to centering queer voices throughout every stage of production.

We’re proud to have contributed to a project that supports LGBTQA safety, autonomy, and dignity—and to do so as a queer-led studio working alongside our community.
