NSW DPE Delivery Office

The Delivery Office within the NSW Department of Planning and Environment had a unique challenge: supporting various teams within the department by keeping them informed about new technologies and procedures. To facilitate this, they were developing a crucial tool—a series of screen-recorded training videos. Their vision was to infuse these videos with custom animations to maintain a consistent aesthetic and enhance viewer engagement. We were thrilled to assist them in bringing their vision to life, particularly as their style inspiration was a blend of “BoJack Horseman” and iconic New South Wales animals.

From a survey conducted within the Delivery Office, we selected Koala, Platypus, Major Mitchell Cockatoo, Barking Owl, and Jewelled Gecko as the stars of our project. Each of these animals was chosen for their distinctive personalities, which we used as a foundation to create unique characters. Their personalities were expressed through their clothing and their interactions within the group. For instance:

  • Koala, the supportive and wise elder, contributed stability and experience.
  • Major Mitchell, the energetic and outgoing young member, brought contagious enthusiasm.
  • Barking Owl, with her maternal instincts, offered big-picture thinking and a grounded perspective.
  • Jewelled Gecko, the trendy and forward-thinking young woman, provided fresh insights.
  • Platypus, a polymath non-binary individual, excelled in various roles and had a particular affinity for fieldwork.

We then imagined how their office dynamics would look and constructed nine distinct scenes, including office meetings, whiteboard scheduling, outdoor fieldwork, process development, online meetings, research transitioning from physical to digital, the use of Microsoft dashboards, stakeholder discussions, and team celebrations.

These animated scenes injected visual interest and personality into the training materials, effectively enhancing the Delivery Office’s brand identity. The result was a charming and fun cast of customized characters and scenes that resonated with the passionate work of the Delivery Office and the NSW Department of Planning and Environment.
